Networking For Results

by Lee Hayes, Volunteer and Sandy Boyce, Placements Co-Chair

The Professional Development Advisory Group co-hosted its first event with the Education committee 5-7 PM on Dec. 8, 2003. The reception prior to the talk provided the
more than 75 CFA Chicago members and guests with the opportunity for a head start on their networking!

Subsequently, keynoter Vickie Austin presented "The Golden Rolodex: How to Network for Results," an informative and animated overview of the art of networking. Her "common sense" and practical tips included:

  • Make NETWORKING A PRIORITY. Don't wait until you need it because it will be too late. Networking is a way of life.
  • Honor the NETWORKING CODE. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Providing help with no strings will provide the greatest returns.
  • Look for NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES and keep current with your contacts.
  • ASK PERMISSION to use a networking contact's name.
  • NEVER DISCOUNT the power of a "Thank You," expressed either by phone, hand written note or via an appropriate gift.
  • DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE DEPTH OF YOUR NETWORK. Contacts go far beyond business acquaintances. Remember to reach out thoroughly to neighbors, spousal friends, parents, fellow alumni, religious groups, and professional contacts like your accountant or lawyer. One guest got his job through his barber!

The one hour presentation was followed by Q&A and more networking. All participants received a list of fellow attendees. Everyone thus was enabled to apply their finely developed networking skills in the spirit of the virtuoso who explained he got to Carneige Hall by "practice, practice, practice!"
