Program Description:
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the third time in a decade this March-and may do so again at the next rate-setting meetings. What is the US economic outlook given the potential shifts in economic policy signaled by the new US administration? What role should the Fed play in fostering long-term economic growth? Join the Council on Global Affairs for a discussion on the role of the Federal Reserve and the outlook for the US economy.

Loretta J. Mester has served as the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland since 2014. She is also as an adjunct professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a fellow at the Wharton Financial Institutions Center. Mester joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in 1985 as an economist, becoming senior vice president and director of research in 2000, and executive vice president and director of research in 2010. Her areas of research expertise and interest include the organizational structure and productive efficiency of financial institutions, and financial intermediation and regulation, among others. Mester is managing editor of the International Journal of Central Banking and co-editor of the Journal of Financial Services Research, and she has published numerous articles in academic and professional journals. She holds a BA from Barnard College of Columbia University, and an MA and PhD from Princeton University.
