Program Description: 
Economists have different opinions on where we are in the economic cycle and where we will be near future. Factor in trade tariffs from major trading partners, Brexit, and tightening monetary policy from the FED, and possibly ECB, and the market is prone to be volatile. Come join the discussion on how to position portfolios in rising volatile markets from Asset Owners and Asset Managers.

Speaker Bios: 

Timothy Barron, CAIA, is the chief investment officer of Segal Marco Advisors. He manages the firm’s Research Department and oversees all investment activities, chairs Segal Marco’s Investment Committee and is on the Governing Committee of the Global Investment Research Alliance. Barron has over 40 years of experience in the investment industry. Prior to joining Segal Marco Advisors, Barron was president and CEO of Rogerscasey and its head of research. He has also worked in asset management and as a plan sponsor. Barron holds an MBA in finance and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation. 



Chris Caparelli, CFA,  is a vice president for Marquette Associates and has 11 years of investment experience. He joined Marquette in 2009 and serves as the primary consultant on several client relationships, with a focus on public funds, Taft-Hartley plans and nonprofit organizations. He is a member of the firm’s traditional investment manager search committee. Prior to joining Marquette, Caparelli was an analyst in the fund marketing group of Henderson Global Investors. Caparelli was an Evans Scholar at Marquette University, where he graduated with a B.S. in finance from the applied investment management program. He holds an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Caparelli is a CFA charterholder, a member of the CFA Institute, and the CFA Society Chicago.



Ellen J. Ellison, CFA, has served as chief investment officer of the University of Illinois Foundation since January 2013 when she was recruited to staff and build the first independent investment team based in Chicago.  Ellison has since enlisted an investment and operational team as well as managed the $1.75 billion endowment pool of the Foundation.  Based in Chicago, she is a member of the Foundation’s senior leadership team headquartered at the Flagship University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana. Prior to joining the Foundation, Ellison had significant experience in investment management and endowment management: she served as executive director of investments at the University of Miami from 2006 – 2012 and was responsible for multi-class asset investment pools, including university endowment and pension funds. She has also served as the chief investment officer at J.I.K. Investment Services, Inc., a family office in Miami, Fla., and as a senior vice president at Fiduciary Trust Company International in both New York and Miami. Ellison also holds the Charted Financial Analyst designation. The Glen Cove, N.Y. native received a bachelor’s degree in French literature from Mount Holyoke College and then earned an MBA from Columbia University Business School. She speaks four languages and serves on a number of not-for-profit boards.



Patricia Halper, CFA, oversees all of Chicago Equity Partners' equity products as well as the equity portfolio management and quantitative research groups. Previously, she was a member of the quantitative research team. Prior to joining the firm, she worked at the institutional futures sales desk at Paine Webber. Halper holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Loyola University Chicago and a master's degree in financial mathematics from the University of Chicago. She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and is a member of CFA Institute, CFA Society Chicago, the Chicago Quantitative Alliance, the Economic Club of Chicago, and the Chicago Network. Additionally, she is on the Board of Trustees for La Rabida Children's Hospital. Halper also previously served on CFA Society Chicago's Board of Directors.




Josh Lohmeier, CFA, is head of investment grade credit and AIA investment officer at Aviva Investors. He joined the firm in 2008 and is currently responsible for US investment grade credit strategies. Lohmeier has more than 18 years of industry management experience, including 12 years as a portfolio manager. Prior to joining the firm, he worked for AllianceBernstein as an investment grade portfolio manager. He was also assistant vice president of investments and investment grade portfolio manager at American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company. In addition, he has held analyst positions at Wells Fargo Financial and RSM McGladrey.

Lohmeier holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Northern Iowa. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a member of CFA Institute and CFA Society Chicago.



Kevin Zagortz is the US head of portfolio management for Aon’s U.S. Delegated Portfolio Management team where he is responsible for the oversight and execution of their US clients’ investment strategies. His primary focus is on corporate defined benefit plans where he specializes in liability hedging portfolio design and execution, derivative strategies, and tactical asset allocation. Prior to joining the firm, Zagortz spent his early career as a pension actuary and transitioned to the investment industry where he served as portfolio manager for a start-up hedge fund. Zagortz graduated with a BS in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin with High Honors and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
