The Importance of Multiple Professional Certifications when Serving Private Wealth Management Clients

In today's market, high net worth clients demand a comprehensive approach to financial planning. Since they expect advice on a broad range of topics, their advisors need to be multi-skilled. Many advisors turn to certification programs for the advanced education they need to handle their clients' diverse demands. The CFA® and the CFP® certifications are both useful to financial planners, but offer education in different areas.


Michael Falk, CFA, Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, ProManage Inc. Mr. Falk is responsible for developing and monitoring ProManage's investment policies and procedures. He directs the investment manager research effort, as well as the construction of investment portfolios. He is the Chair of the company’s Investment Committee as well as the primary liaison among the Investment Committee, the company and its clients. Prior to his working at ProManage, he was an equal partner in a financial planning/investment advisory practice.

Aside from his duties at ProManage, Mr. Falk is part of the CFA Institute’s Speaker Retainer Program, an active committee member for the Profit Sharing 401(k) Council of America, and teaches as an adjunct professor at DePaul University in their CFP Certificate Program as well as on behalf of the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Finance. He is also a CFA Charterholder, a member of the CFA Institute, and holds the CRC designation.

Anne Kern, Director of Professional Alliances from the CFP® Board. Ms. Kern joined Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. in June of 1999. Her responsibilities were to educate individuals interested in CFP® certification about the certification process and its requirements. In her current role as Director of Professional Alliances at CFP Board, Ms. Kern continues to oversee these responsibilities and also works to build relationships in the financial planning community with firms, employers, personal financial planning organizations, educational institutions and the general public.

Prior to joining CFP Board, Ms. Kern was Program Director of the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program at Metropolitan State College of Denver. This program is one of the 301 educational programs registered with CFP Board. She was actively involved in the start-up and continued development of this program until she left to join CFP Board.

Ms. Kern received an MBA in International Business from City University in London, England. She earned an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from the University of Colorado – Denver in 1987 and was named the Outstanding Business Graduate.
