Program Description:
Adapting Investment Strategies to a Changing World
Many frameworks and finance models were created in an environment that shaped our collective experience over the last 30-50 years. Recently many dynamics in the investment landscape have changed: geopolitical instability, an expanded role of governments in capital markets, and correlations between previously believed unrelated securities has become a challenging reality. This new macro-driven investment climate has increased scrutiny of traditional portfolio management practices. Discover how recent changes in the global investment landscape should shape your strategic and tactical investment decisions.

What you will learn:

  • Identify the geopolitical and macroeconomic dynamics that are challenging traditional thinking about portfolio management and the explanatory power of modern portfolio theory
  • Understand how CIOs and investment practitioners are responding to these dynamics
  • Discuss the effects on capital markets of increasing activity from institutions and governments and new regulatory regimes
  • Discover new portfolio management techniques of increasing relevance in current investment climate

Lunch Keynote:
Ian Bremmer - President and Founder, Eurasia Group

Closing Keynote:
Brian Singer, CFA - Partner and Head of the Dynamic Allocation Strategies, William Blair and Company

Doug Brown - Chief Investment Officer, Exelon Corporation
Cheryl Cargie - Senior Vice President, Head Trader, Ariel Investments
Carol Clark - Senior Policy Advisor, Financial Markets, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago
Carmen Heredia-Lopez, CFA - Chief Investment Officer, Chicago Public School Teachers' Pension and Retirement Fund

Session Descriptions:
Session 1: CIO Perspective - Anticipating and Managing New Risks (Brown, Gilfedder, Heredia-Lopez, McLean)
The role of the Chief Investment Officer has never been more challenging. Recent events have caused CIOs to re-evaluate everything from asset allocation to investment policies to how to best structure an investment team. Finding the right balance between risk and reward is especially important in the current environment of geopolitical risks, rallying risk assets and central bank intervention. Hear directly from the CIOs of three large institutions, representing a public pension plan, corporate pension plan, and endowment fund, on how they have adapted their investment decision process and governance structure to account for this new environment. Session 2: What Lies Beneath: Seismic Shifts in Market Structure - Equity, Fixed Income and Regulatory Perspectives (Cargie, Clark, Eisen, Riaz)
The best investment thesis, the soundest investment research can be severely undermined by poor execution and, in an environment characterized by increasing levels of noise and questionable levels of liquidity, “implementation shortfall” poses a serious challenge to investment performance. The afternoon’s panel attempts to illuminate some of the current issues surrounding trade execution in both equity and fixed income markets and the strategies various investors have adopted or propose to counter their impact.
